Saving sea turtles

For a long time the Habaraduwa Turtle Farm has been rescuing and saving sea turtles for the future generations. As a result of human activities, those turtles faced critical conditions.

You can learn how sea turtles are being taken care of and how baby turtles hatch from eggs.

Every year, turtles get together in certain arias of the ocean to mate. The adult female turtles, i.e. those who are at least 30 years old, then come to the beach where they lay their eggs at night. Turtles prefer to lay their eggs on the same beach they were born.

They can lay as many as 120 eggs at a time. The size of the eggs is comparable to the size of table tennis balls. The turtles themselves do not take care of the hatching. Sun heats the eggs and the new-born turtles start to hatch after about 60 days.
